Camp GEMS Recipient Announced.

The Camp GEMS Scholarship Committee (Jamie Ross, Peggy Dishop and Bonna Patrick sitting in for Amy Jones) met May 26th to review applications and select one girl to attend camp this summer. Last year we did not open up the application process to local schools because the oldest daughter of AAUW member Shawndel Wilson, Ashley Wilson, was afforded the opportunity to attend. Extending the scholarship to a club member's daughter when she is eligible has been a long-time policy of the committee and branch. As an 8th grader, Ashley falls into the right age-group to attend again this year.

During discussion at the April meeting, members decided that the competition would be opened up to allow any 7th or 8th grade girl in Logan County to apply, including Ashley Wilson. There were a record 14 applications from all four school districts in Logan County, plus Calvary Christian School.

After carefully reading and discussing the applications and considering the issue at length, the committee felt that Ashley Wilson's application was superior to any other submitted. Her enthusiasm for enhancing her knowledge of science and math has led to many creative projects and a clear desire to excel in subjects that challenge her. As a result, the committee has selected Ashley Wilson as the recipient of the 2009 Camp GEMS Scholarship.

Congratulations Ashley!
